what happened to the 5cent and 10 cent coins
May 15 2010, 8:43 PM EDT | Post edited: May 15 2010, 8:43 PM EDT
Activists have called on governments to adopt the $1 maximum button push and maximum $120 per hour loss limit, believed to be a key recommendation of the yet-to-be-released Productivity Commission Inquiry into Gambling.
I want to know what happened to the 5cent and 10 cent coins they used to use.....they have to do something, I suppose a $1, is a start.

You can bet up to $5 on a 1¢ Victorian pokie. The maximum loss per hour would be $6,000.
If adopted, you could still use 1¢, 5¢ 10¢ and $1 machines so long as the maximum bet per button push was no more than $1 and the volatility reduced to limit hourly losses to $120.

The 5c, 10c and 20c coins were replace with $1 coins to make it easier with cash clearance and for convenience to the player. Yes, some might say that this speeds up play, and to some extent yes it does.
I doubt the $1 bet limit will come in as it will cost the Govt way too much in revenue. Even the drop from $10 to $5 has hurt. I know of a venue that has dropped average bet 8c per spin since January 1.

That would be if you didn't receive a win over that hour... You and I know that is not the case. But that debate is for another time.
My question is, how are you going to enforce the $120 loss per hour limit???

Software alteration. Cash acceptor maximum is probably centrally controlled like it is in Queensland.
More frequent and smaller wins will do it.
Victoria also has the fastest spin rate. Slow it to the same as SA to 3.5 seconds.

This is a must do thing. Cut the spin rate.

No argument from me on that one...

I know of two people who have lost $1900 in one and a half hours playing a 1c machine in SA. Over the life time of a machine, it IS POSSIBLE to play for one hour and not have a win. True, it is unlikely and uncommon, but it is possible and has happenned.

How are you going to enforce the $120 loss per hour limit???
Aaah, that is easy! Game designers will either have to adjust the number and distribution of symbols on the reel strips and the spin speeds so that a maximum loss of $120 per hour occurs OR players will have to have a precommit card that locks them out of all games in all venues across a state once a net loss of $120 in any one hour is reached.

That is laughable and will NEVER happen!!!

While I don't agree with this view, I regard it as a sincere suggestion, sincerely made. Comments classifying suggestions as "laughable" without explainging why that is so, will be deleted in future. 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

" Over the life time of a machine, it IS POSSIBLE to play for one hour and not have a win. "
NO, that is physically impossible due to the laws of probability which any mathematician will tell you.
And as far as the $120 loss per hour is concerned, if you MAKE everyone have a pre commitment card you are violating their civil liberties... That's why it's laughable!!! :)

I find this laughable, all of us have had our civil liberties violated.

Nothing is physically impossible, you are the type that gives in easy.....Do you work for ALH. I think you do...

Mathematicians will actually tell you that it is possible to flip a coin 1 million times and not have it land on heads once. They will also tell you that the odds of this happening are infantisamally small. They will NEVER tell you that it is "physically impossible" because the law of probability deals with the odds of an event happening over time.
Equally, mathematicians will tell you that the odds of playing for an hour and not have a win on a poker machine are miniscule. They would also tell you that the odds of it NEVER happening (not even once a year) would also be miniscule.

Quote of the day.....The 50-50-90 rule: Anytime you have a 50-50 chance of getting something right, there's a 90% probability you'll get it wrong.

I can assure you I don't work for ALH... I personally believe that pubs should only have a maximum of 30 machines which is the case in NSW, but the Govt completely stuffed that up by giving pubs as many machines as clubs... I just don't like people telling lies about pokies!!!

I'm not going to humour you and go to your link. You know damn well that in reality it is NOT possible to go 1.5 hours on a gaming machine without a win, but you choose to float that possibility to the ignorant few who choose to believe that!!! :)
