Woolworths
Sep 3 2009, 9:42 PM EDT
I am horrified by this news that Safeway/Woolworths are so heavily entrenched in the pokies culture. The Pokies have a huge impact on our society. Many of our problem gamblers inherited the problem and the cycle will continue if pokies venues are promoted as "child friendly/family friendly". Along with Woolies growing dependence on selling lower-grade overseas product, especially from China, to a country that should be able to sustain our own nutrition requirements, I have decided to buy my groceries from independant grocers. Often family grocers that support aussie farmers, and sell fresh (not year old) product.

Someone not being able to handle the small freedoms we have at the moment is not worthy of being the reason for destruction of all things we enjoy. Sick of the PC fun nanny brigade. UNREGULATED SMOKING AND GAMBLING AREAS (whatever a venue wants to do) PLEASE.

This last post is evidence of the myth put forward by those who want to protect their pokie revenue from problem gamblers i.e. that the measures recently recommended by the Productivity Commission somehow will affect recreational gamblers. Hard research authorised by the Victorian Department of Justice and the Commission's own findings observes that measures such as compulsory pre-commitment and the $1 button pus / $120 per hour loss limit / $20 note acceptor restriction will have little affect on the recreational gambler. It really is time to get on with true pokie gambling reform focussed on the problem gambler. I asked my wife to try Aldi, just for a couple of weeks. The savings are there, we are regular shoppers there now. The amount of people going to this Aldi store is unreal.
