Woolworths

Last Christmas the Carols in the Domain were sponsored by Woolworth’s supermarkets, the beneficiary of the event is the Salvation Army. I found this disturbing that the Salvos would be involved in this as it appeared to me that this is a conflict of interest. I wrote to the Salvos and they replied that they don't actually get the money direct from Woolworths but it is passed on by the organiser. Convenient that this is the excuse that this somehow makes it acceptable that the company who creates a lot of the misery for families by it's profiteering from it's gambling and alcohol venues gives the Salvos most of it's clients. Tim Costello from World Vision is awake to this type of behaviour and would not accept donations from any gambling company. This is not the only area that Woolworth’s gets it's PR machine in action, the other is in fruit and vegetable as well as meat. Every year it promotes it's fund raiser for the bush but on the other hand is more than happy to obtain goods from overseas grower. It is time that someone took this company to task.

If you are looking for the connection between Woolworths and the Salvation Army, look no further than Roger Corbett. He is the ex-CEO of Woolworths and the person who made the deal to put Woolworths in the pokie business. Mr Corbett is Chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, Australian Eastern Territory.
Check out the blurb from his agent here: http://www.saxton.com.au/default.asp?sd8=3519
I blogged about Mr Corbett conflicting beliefs in October 2008 and included the ABC taking him to account on these conflicts. Please read it here:

I have no control over the advertising. I also receive nothing for what is carried here other than free use of Wetpaint's web software and hosting. Wetpaint that specialises in wikis and I think is based in Seattle. I understand that I am amongst 1 million web sites they host. They, in turn, seem to farm out their advertising to Google. My guess is that Google picks up on PokieWatch's use of the word "Woolworths" and figures that visitors to this site want to see messages about Woolworths. While I began to write this post they were ads for ComSec spruicking buying shares in Woolworths. Now they are for counselling online. The advertising changes frequently. 1  out of 4 found this valuable. Do you?

It's actually humorous what Google picks up on. I am in New York and it is showing me an ad as to how to find cheap hotels near the Woolworths building in lower Manhattan. Also an ad for a guide for corporate governance.

Anyone looking at the web site can see that because of these comments and at a cost of about US$20 per month, all ad have been gone for several months. Do you find this valuable?
