Hey, question? Has there been any reduction in Pokies since Nick Xenophon has come in, or has it not been effective?

More women are becoming addicted to gambling, as Australians pump $6 million a day through poker machines.
Gambling in Australia is becoming more and more "feminised," says University of Queensland School of Tourism researcher Dr Timothy Lee. A third of problem gamblers are women, at a time when Australia leads the world in the number of poker machines. "It has traditionally been a male pursuit. There is now a high level of women's gambling activity in Australia," Dr Lee said. Women accounted for 64 per cent of the use of poker machines, which in turn accounted for 74 per cent of the growth in gambling in Australia in recent years. Compared to men, women were found to have a more rapid progression into problem gambling. Dr Lee said problem gambling among women resulted in family and relationship breakdowns, child neglect, depression, fraud and suicidal thoughts. Women often turned to gambling to escape trauma, loneliness, stress and boredom. "The female problem gambler is usually withdrawn, socially isolated and is suffering from extreme feelings of guilt, shame and low self-esteem," Dr Lee said. He said new steps were needed to minimise harm, such as placing cash machines away from gaming areas, installing clocks, providing information on support services and having non-gaming activities at pubs and clubs with poker machines. Dr Lee's paper will be published in the next issue of Tourism Analysis. News alerts: Get breaking news first. Download free ninemsn news alerts now.

Just take a look at your local venue and just see how many people are playing the POKIES at Easter time. This is for sure, just another very unhappy day for them all, it must be.

Overhearing a conversation with the manager of the Sandown Hotel, "We need people to visit the pokies, a lot of people just walk out after having dinner". I thought, we must be succeeding in some very small way.

I am horrified by this news that Safeway/Woolworths are so heavily entrenched in the pokies culture. The Pokies have a huge impact on our society. Many of our problem gamblers inherited the problem and the cycle will continue if pokies venues are promoted as "child friendly/family friendly". Along with Woolies growing dependence on selling lower-grade overseas product, especially from China, to a country that should be able to sustain our own nutrition requirements, I have decided to buy my groceries from independant grocers. Often family grocers that support aussie farmers, and sell fresh (not year old) product.

I heard one of the staff say with 200 people on the exclusion list , how the hell are we supposed to remember all the faces. Very true. |

i want to start a campaign in my suburb to rid our local woolies owned tavern of pokies, if we can get enough signitures these ostrich type pollies will have to sit up and listen, Rudd is full of wind he states he hates them , now he realises how much revenue they make he is very quiet about them, These machines are a scourge on society and an artificial reef should be made out of them, they are just revenue collectors for the goverment and the bloated parasitical elite, kids i know eat weeties for dinner because there is no money for proper food , woolies dont care they sell the weeties to, may be we could get our pubs back like they used to be if we got rid of them , instead of mini casinos in every suburb run by the ex fruit and vegie manager from the store

Tabcorp Holdings undertook as a firm commitment in 2004 AND 2005 to ensure that ALL of their venues would keep all gambling machines functional and useable until closing time of the venue. They agreed to this measure with Michael Heaton QC, Independent Person presiding over an Independent COmplaint Resolution Process action, managing a complaint from a consumer who was found to have been harmed b ythe practice of early closing of machines. The consumer was awarded a payout by Tabaret venues eventually but the consumer refused to take the money because it would have meant keeping silent.
Point is...early machine-closing was found to exacerbate an addicted problem gambler's spending by inciting anxiety, frustration, fear and desire to play harder and faster, similar to study findings that examined poker machine users' behaviour when it was argued that machines must not become 'scarce commodities' in venues. The Venue Operators' Code of Practice was found to have been breached by venues who closed machines early. The Tabcorp venues that we have visited since, have all broken this rule (except Aces) and the promise by Tabcorp Holdings has been ignored and allowed to be broken. www.dutyofcare.org.au Protest with Duty of Care Inc on Sunday 24th August 2008 at Sydney's Tumbalong Park, Darling Harbour, at 10.30am.
