The lack of action in government to problem gambling is either government is addicted to taxes raised, or politicians are addicted to fostering their own corrupt behaviours. This is so immense it is hard to start.
Last night I attended the Burwood RSL Annual General Meeting. The second ordinary general resolution put was about Directors right to reimbursement for costs incurred in fostering the clubs activities. The resolution effectively means that the 9 directors have uncapped right to travel and accomodation regulated only by themselves. Should you access the 6 resolutions it is clearly a case of "snouts at the trough". 2 years ago I wrote to the club asking them why it is OK to have gross poker machine revenue of $22,000,000, pay their $5.5m state taxes, pay other related expenses of $11m plus about $460,000 community grants and retain $4m in accumulated members funds. Monies that are in law for the benefit of members and community. As of now the Club has assets of about $30m plus investments approaching $50m. One of those investments is a 3 bedroom house leased to the former president at $175 per week. I did not get a reply. I circulated my letter to several politicians. The State minister for Racing and Gambling (Minister Greene) cutely replied he could not answer that, I should address my enquiries to the club concerned. (I would be happy to share that source document if anyone wants more detail). Lee Rhiannon of the Greens (now Federal MLC) simply took the opportunity to add me to the Greens mailing list. Since that date Burwood RSL have stopped sending me financial results, even though by law, if I request it, which I have, they must as a member. Short form accounts are available on their website. There is a worse example in my district. It is Canterbury Hurlstone Park RSL. Their gross poker machine earnings exceed $30m. Please add your thoughts.

I have been told that up to 3 R.S.L.'s will close after Christmas, all have been run very poorly. You just have to have promotions going on all the time, just like the big boys do, you must have the place looking busy. Nothing worse than sitting in a venue that has no one in it. Wake up you lot.

ONE in four Victorian RSL sub-branches is likely to close in the next 10 years as clubs are hit by financial pressures, an ageing membership base and poor management.
Ten of the state's 63 licensed sub-branches have asked ask for financial assistance to survive, with many of them being lent hundreds of thousands of dollars by Anzac House. One club received a $1.3 million loan to finance major changes aimed at boosting its bottom line. In the past two years three sub-branches have either closed or ceased commercial operations - at Eltham, Dromana-Red Hill and inner-city Windsor Lane - and this month members of the Aspendale-Edithvale sub-branch voted to merge with Chelsea. RSL state president Maj-Gen David McLachlan said there was a cloud over five bayside clubs, with up to three facing the prospect of closure or mergers because they were asset-rich but cash-poor. Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar. .End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar. He said about 80 of the state's 300 sub-branches might be forced to merge or close within 10 years. Mr McLachlan said the state branch was keeping a closer watch on sub-branches as gaming machine revenue slumped 5 per cent on average across the state. Clubs were now required to file monthly financial reports. One suburban sub-branch treasurer said the problem was often the "sheer incompetence" of local elected committees who were resistant to change and resentful of state office intervention. He said: "Unless they get people with business acumen on committees, many clubs will go to the wall."

Strange that at a time when Poker Machine Reforms seem to be a real possibility that the Victorian Government has seemingly pulled their Poker Machine help ads in favour of the much lesser Online Gambling type ads they now feature.
Naturally they take in Billions from Pokies and far far less from Online Gambling, so is this a way of fulfilling their Anti Gambling dollar commitment rather sneakily, because just as addicts are addicted to the Pokies this Government is as heavily addicted to the revenue it gets from them and surely would hardly want to seem to be in some way supportive at this time, of the implementation of controls to the machines costing them money as well. |

I have always found this venue to be very proactive against problem gamblers. The fact that this venue is a Club actually means the staff know its members really well.

Cloes hotels are activley seeking to get parents to hand off their children to others so that they will come in and gamble during school holidays. I find the fact that they are promoting this disgusting.

How do we control the poker machine damage?
Firstly we should look at tobacco packaging, an eqivalent product that has reeked havoc in our health system. Firstly turn off the whizzing bangs and lights and replace them with pictures graphically displaying the effects of playing this machine. Destroyed lives, hungry children, baillifs repossessing houses, angry and frustrated relatives, suicides, and overcrowded prisons And clear written warnings that playing this machine is highly addictive not only to the player but to the people governing them. When I buy my cigarettes and every time I choose to smoke one I am reminded of the damage that this form of “legitimate entertainment” can cause. As members of the community we should have a say in how dangerous products are marketed
