A directions hearing was conducted with respect to this application on 12 August 2008. Argument was conducted about public disclosure of the venues where the pokies for Club Edgewater would be sourced. Counsel for the club sought that the names of these venues where the number of pokies would be reduced not be disclosed to the public. Notes indicate that 53 pokies would be transfered to the new premises by the club. It was stated that the pokie facilities at Whitten Oval would be closed. It is reasonable to calculate that this might result in a reduction of 5 pokies from Club Leeds. A further 17 pokies would be removed from other premises. The net result would be a reduction in 11 pokies in the city. According to counsel, the city had commissioned a survey and wanted to ask participants what the effect on the community of such reductions might be.
The hearing was set for a date in November.
If these reductions were to be sourced from premises supplied by Tattersall's within the City of Maribrynong, it would seem that the source of these pokies would be the Yarraville Club or the Yarraville Cricket Club or venues associated with Safeway/Woolworths.
A Monash University study reported that the City of Maribyrnong had the 2nd highest percentage of problem gamblers in Victoria.
